About us

The Future School Research Center (FSR) is a multidisciplinary research community
functioning at the University of Oulu and coordinated by the Faculty of Education.
The operation of the FSR aims at promoting the mental and physical welfare of future citizens. The center aims

– to research, experiment with and foster innovative future-oriented pedagogical practices,
– to develop a research-based culture of learning and teaching,
– to acquire thorough familiarity with the opportunities and limitations offered by ICT in a pedagogical environment,
– to produce high-quality research data connected with future learning, and
– to publish knowledge related to this field to actors and cooperation partners in the field of education.

The scientific director of the FSR is Professor, Dean Riitta-Liisa Korkeamäki. The Center’s activities consist of projects implemented through complementary funding, research carried out with budget funding and theses.

Important national cooperation partners include the Education Department of the City of Oulu, University of Helsinki/CICERO Learning, National Board of Education, and the Heureka Science Center. There is also project cooperation with several innovative companies such as Polar Electro Finland, Microsoft, Nokia, NCC and Elisa. The most important international cooperation partner is ETEN, the European Teacher Education Network with more than 50 universities in Europe and the United States of America.

Future School 2nd Wave 2011-2013 project started in September 2011 and it has three subprojects: Media Education in FutureSchool, TeknoLiteracy (begins in 2012) and Oppimisen ja opettamisen tukeminen tulevaisuuden koulussa [Supporting learning and teaching in FutureSchool]. The project is funded by the European Social Fund and the city of Oulu.

Finished projects are the Future School Research 1st Wave 2009-2011 (with its three subprojects: Literacy in the 21st Century, FutureStep and FutureStory); OPTEK – Opetusteknologia koulun arjessa [Educational technologies in schools] (Tekes); Liikkeelle! [Move!] (National Board of Education) and Suuntana tulevaisuus [Heading to the Future] (City of Oulu).
